Vintage colour engraving from 1864 showing King Richard the Lionheart on his deathbed. Richard was killed while laying siege to the castle of Chalus-Chabrol. Although he forgave the enemy archer who shot him, after Richard died the infamous mercenary captain Mercadier had the crossbowman flayed alive and hanged. View More:
