circa 1860: Peter Frederick Rothermel (1817-1895). American painter. Born in Pennsylvania, trained as a surveyor, later a sign painter. Began to paint portraits in Philadelphia, later turned to historical subjects. Director, Pennsylvania Academy 1847-55. Among his works are: 'Columbus Before the Queen' 1841, 'De Soto Discovering the Mississippi River' 1843, 'Patrick Henry Before the Virginia House of Burgesses' 1851, 'The Battle of Gettysburg' 1870.
