circa 1870: Irish nationalist and journalist John Mitchel (1815 - 1875). Practiced law from 1840, contributed articles to the 'Nation' from 1842, founded and edited 'United Irishman', 1848, calling for rebellion against England. Arrested, tried, convicted of sedition, sentenced to 14 years transportation to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania). Escaped 1853 to America, edited proslavery journals, imprisoned 1865 for pro Confederate support, returned to Ireland 1875, elected MP. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images) John Mitchel
