Vintage engraving from1846 of a scene from the English Civil War (1642 to 1651) showing the Conference at the Isle of Wight. During the English Civil War King Charles fled to the Isle of Wight, believing he would receive sympathy from the governor, Robert Hammond. Hammond was appalled, and imprisoned the king in Carisbrooke Castle.
