DESCRIPTION

In the battle of Issus, 333 BC, Alexander the Great gains his first victory over the Persians under their king Darius III. The Persian camp falls prey to Alexander. Wife and family of King Darius, Alexander treated like relatives, since he already feels as his successor. The illustration shows the excuse of the mother of Darius to Alexander, because they had confused him with his closest confidants Hephaestion (c. 356 BC – 324 BC). Woodcut engraving, published in 1864.
